Chapter Leadership Highlights: DE-Memphis
Introduction
July of each year is Drive Electric Tennessee Month, this year we interviewed Co-Chairs of our Drive Electric Tennessee Chapters. Drive Electric Memphis is the newest DET Chapter, established at the end of 2023. DE-Memphis and MLGW attended the Shelby Farms Park Earth Day celebration in April 2024 and spoke with other attendees about the benefits of transportation electrification!

Q: What EV do you drive?
I drive a 2024 BMW i4 eDrive35.
Q: What made you decide to be a chapter leader?
I serve as a chapter leader because it provides a great opportunity to share my passion for EVs with other EV drivers and those interested in learning about electric vehicles.
Q: How long have you driven an EV?
I bought my first EV in 2016. It was a Chevrolet Volt, which is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). After eight years driving a PHEV, I felt comfortable enough to purchase my first battery-electric vehicle (BEV). I have no regrets.
Q: What changes have you experienced since switching to an EV?
I enjoy driving an EV because it’s quiet, quick, clean and convenient. The only disadvantage is that road trips take longer because there are more frequent stops that take a little longer than filling a traditional gas-powered vehicle.
Q: What is the longest trip you’ve taken in your EV? What were the starting and ending cities of that trip?
I recently drove from Memphis to Chicago and back. Here’s a link to my Reddit post: My First EV Road Trip.
Q: What do you wish you had known prior to purchasing your first EV?
I don’t think there was anything I wished I’d known, because I did a lot of research before purchasing my first EV and have done so for each car I’ve ever purchased. As a lifelong learner, this is just one of the many things that I enjoy learning.
Q: What question are you asked most at Chapter events/meetings?
The two most frequent questions are how far and how long (how far can you go on one charge and how long does it take to charge). When answering these questions, it’s important to understand each driver’s use case. A vast majority of drivers have a daily commute that represents a small fraction of their EV’s maximum range, meaning that practically all of their charging will be at home while they’re sleeping.
